IELTS Listening Mock Test Practice with Answers

If you are preparing for IELTS, taking an IELTS Listening mock test is one of the most useful ways to understand your current level, practise under realistic conditions, and identify the question types that are costing you marks.

The IELTS Listening test contains 40 questions across four parts. You hear each recording only once, and the test uses a range of question types, including multiple choice, matching, form completion, note completion, sentence completion, table completion, flow-chart completion and map or diagram labelling.

In this guide, you will learn how to practise an IELTS Listening mock test effectively, how to check your answers, how to understand your mistakes, and how to use your score to plan your next stage of preparation.

Quick answer: The best IELTS Listening mock test practice should reproduce the real test conditions as closely as possible: use one complete test, listen only once, avoid pausing or replaying the recording, answer all 40 questions, check your answers afterwards, and analyse every mistake rather than looking only at your final score.

What Is an IELTS Listening Mock Test?

An IELTS Listening mock test is a practice test designed to simulate the Listening section of the real IELTS examination.

A useful mock test should allow you to practise:

  • Listening for specific information
  • Understanding main ideas
  • Following conversations
  • Identifying changes or corrections
  • Recognising different accents
  • Predicting possible answers
  • Spelling answers correctly
  • Managing time and attention
  • Handling different IELTS Listening question types

Official IELTS practice materials include a variety of Listening tasks and allow test takers to become familiar with the test format and compare their answers with answer keys.

The goal is not simply to get a high number of correct answers.

A good mock test should tell you why you lost marks and what you need to improve before your real IELTS exam.

IELTS Listening Test Format

Before starting an IELTS Listening mock test, it is important to understand the structure of the section.

Feature IELTS Listening
Number of parts 4
Number of questions 40
Approximate listening time 30 minutes
Questions per part 10
Recordings 4
Number of times you hear recordings Once
Score 40 marks converted to IELTS bands
Academic vs General Training Same Listening test

The four parts generally progress from everyday situations to more educational or academic contexts. Parts 1 and 2 focus on everyday or social situations, while Parts 3 and 4 involve educational or training contexts.

IELTS Listening Part 1

Part 1 usually involves a conversation between two speakers in an everyday social situation.

For example, the conversation might involve:

  • Booking accommodation
  • Asking about a service
  • Making travel arrangements
  • Registering for an activity
  • Discussing an appointment

You may need to identify details such as names, addresses, dates, prices or telephone numbers.

IELTS Listening Part 2

Part 2 normally features one main speaker discussing an everyday situation.

Possible topics include:

  • Local facilities
  • Community services
  • Public events
  • Tourist information
  • Instructions or announcements

IELTS Listening Part 3

Part 3 generally involves an educational or training situation.

You may hear two or more speakers discussing:

  • A university assignment
  • A research project
  • A course
  • A presentation
  • An academic problem

This section can be challenging because speakers may change their opinions, correct information or disagree with each other.

IELTS Listening Part 4

Part 4 is usually a monologue about an academic or educational topic.

The speaker may give a lecture or presentation about a subject such as:

  • Environmental science
  • History
  • Psychology
  • Technology
  • Biology
  • Education

Part 4 can be particularly challenging because there is usually one speaker talking continuously and the information may be more densely organised.

How to Take an IELTS Listening Mock Test Properly

Many students take practice tests but do not use them effectively.

If you want your mock-test score to tell you something useful about your preparation, follow realistic test conditions.

Step 1: Choose a Complete Listening Test

Whenever possible, use a full 40-question Listening test rather than practising only one question type.

A complete mock test gives you a better picture of your ability to maintain concentration across all four parts.

Step 2: Remove Distractions

Choose a quiet environment.

Put your phone away, close unnecessary browser tabs and avoid stopping the test to look up vocabulary.

Your goal is to reproduce the concentration required during the real examination.

Step 3: Listen Only Once

The real Listening test requires you to hear each recording once only.

Do not:

  • Pause the recording
  • Replay difficult sections
  • Slow down the audio
  • Read a transcript while listening
  • Search for unfamiliar words

If you miss an answer, move on and continue listening.

Step 4: Follow the Instructions Carefully

Pay close attention to the number of words or numbers allowed in each answer.

For example, if the instruction says:

Write NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER.

An answer containing three words may be marked incorrect even if the information itself is correct.

Step 5: Check Your Answers After the Test

Do not check your answers after every section.

Complete the entire test first.

Then compare your answers with the answer key.

Official IELTS practice materials provide answer keys for many sample Listening tasks.

Step 6: Analyse Your Mistakes

This is the most important step.

For every incorrect answer, ask:

Why did I lose this mark?

Possible reasons include:

  • I did not understand the speaker.
  • I missed the information.
  • I misunderstood the question.
  • I chose the first answer I heard.
  • I did not recognise a paraphrase.
  • I made a spelling mistake.
  • I wrote too many words.
  • I lost concentration.
  • I confused two speakers.
  • I changed a correct answer to an incorrect one.

Your mistake analysis is often more valuable than the score itself.

IELTS Listening Mock Test Practice Questions

The following mini practice set is designed to help you practise several common IELTS Listening skills.

Important: Because this article does not contain an audio recording, this section is a text-based practice exercise, not a replacement for a full IELTS Listening mock test. For realistic preparation, complete the exercise with appropriate audio practice and, ideally, take a full timed mock test.

Part 1: Form Completion

Imagine you are listening to a conversation between a student and a receptionist about joining a sports centre.

Complete the notes.

Questions 1–5

Sports Centre Membership

  1. Student’s surname: __________
  2. Membership type: __________
  3. Monthly cost: £__________
  4. Preferred activity: __________
  5. First class: __________ evening

Transcript

Receptionist: Good morning. How can I help you?

Student: I’d like to join the sports centre.

Receptionist: Certainly. Can I take your surname?

Student: Yes, it’s Morgan. That’s M-O-R-G-A-N.

Receptionist: Thank you. Which membership would you like?

Student: The student membership, please.

Receptionist: That’s £28 per month.

Student: That’s fine. I’m particularly interested in swimming.

Receptionist: We have a swimming class on Thursday evenings.

Student: Perfect. I’d like to start this week if possible.

Answers 1–5

  1. Morgan
  2. student
  3. 28
  4. swimming
  5. Thursday

What This Exercise Tests

This type of question requires you to listen carefully for:

  • Names
  • Spelling
  • Numbers
  • Categories
  • Days
  • Specific details

Part 1 questions often test straightforward information, but students can still lose marks because they become distracted or fail to notice corrections.

Part 2: Multiple Choice Practice

Imagine you are listening to a talk about a new community library.

Question 6

Why was the library renovated?

A. To increase the number of computers
B. To provide more study space
C. To create a larger children’s section
D. To reduce operating costs

Question 7

What new service will be introduced next month?

A. Evening language classes
B. Online book delivery
C. Career counselling
D. Children’s storytelling sessions

Transcript

The library underwent major renovation last year. Although some people expected the project to focus on increasing the number of computers, the main purpose was actually to create additional quiet study areas for students and local residents.

Another change will take place next month. The library already offers several educational activities, but it will soon introduce evening language classes for adults. These sessions will initially focus on conversational English.

Answers

  1. B — To provide more study space
  2. A — Evening language classes

Why Are These Questions Difficult?

IELTS Listening multiple-choice questions often contain several plausible answers.

A speaker may mention all of the options, but only one will answer the question correctly.

For example, the speaker mentioned computers, but computers were not the main reason for the renovation.

This is why you should avoid choosing an answer simply because you hear the same word in the recording.

Part 3: Matching Practice

Imagine two university students are discussing different study resources.

Match each resource with the student’s opinion.

Questions 8–10

Resource Opinion
A. Online lectures Useful for reviewing difficult topics
B. Study groups Useful for exchanging ideas
C. Printed textbooks Too expensive

Transcript

Sara: I watched the recorded lectures again yesterday. They were really useful because I could pause them whenever I didn’t understand something.

David: I prefer studying with other people. When we’re in a group, we can compare our ideas and notice things we’ve missed.

Sara: What about the textbooks?

David: They’re useful, but I don’t think buying all of them is worth the money.

Answers

  1. A — Online lectures
  2. B — Study groups
  3. C — Printed textbooks

Listening Skill: Paraphrasing

Notice that the speakers do not necessarily use exactly the same wording as the answer options.

For example:

Answer option:
“Useful for reviewing difficult topics”

Recording:
“I could pause them whenever I didn’t understand something.”

IELTS Listening frequently tests your ability to recognise meaning rather than identical words.

Part 4: Note Completion Practice

Imagine you are listening to a university lecture about urban green spaces.

Complete the notes.

Questions 11–15

Urban Green Spaces

  1. Trees can help reduce urban __________.
  2. Parks can encourage people to become more physically __________.
  3. Green spaces may improve people’s __________ health.
  4. Community gardens can strengthen relationships between __________.
  5. Successful parks require regular __________.

Transcript

Urban green spaces have become increasingly important as cities become more densely populated. One important benefit of trees is their ability to reduce urban temperatures by providing shade.

Parks can also encourage residents to become more physically active. Walking, cycling and other outdoor activities become easier when attractive public spaces are available.

Researchers have also examined the relationship between green spaces and mental health. Spending time in natural environments may help reduce stress.

Community gardens offer another benefit because they can bring neighbours together and strengthen relationships between residents.

However, creating a park is only the beginning. Public green spaces require regular maintenance if they are to remain safe and attractive.

Answers

  1. temperatures
  2. active
  3. mental
  4. residents
  5. maintenance

How to Check Your IELTS Listening Mock Test Score

After completing a full 40-question IELTS Listening mock test, count the number of correct answers.

The IELTS Listening test contains 40 questions, with one mark awarded for each correct answer. The raw score is converted to the IELTS 9-band scale. IELTS notes that the exact number of correct answers required for a particular band can vary slightly between test versions.

As an approximate guide published by IELTS:

Correct Answers Approximate Listening Band
16 Band 5.0
23 Band 6.0
30 Band 7.0
35 Band 8.0

These figures are approximate rather than a guarantee for every test version.

Why Your Raw Score Matters

Suppose you score:

30/40

That is approximately equivalent to Band 7.0 according to the IELTS scoring guidance.

However, simply knowing that number does not tell you everything.

You should also ask:

  • Did most mistakes happen in Part 3?
  • Did you struggle with multiple choice?
  • Did spelling errors reduce your score?
  • Did you lose concentration in Part 4?
  • Did you misunderstand paraphrased information?
  • Did you make mistakes with numbers and names?

This analysis helps you decide what to practise next.

IELTS Listening Mock Test Score Analysis

Create a simple record after every practice test.

Test Score Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Main Problem
Test 1 24/40 8/10 7/10 5/10 4/10 Part 4
Test 2 27/40 9/10 7/10 6/10 5/10 Part 4
Test 3 30/40 9/10 8/10 7/10 6/10 Paraphrasing

This allows you to see whether your performance is improving.

For example, if your Part 1 score is consistently 9–10 but your Part 4 score remains low, spending most of your study time on easy Part 1 exercises may not be the best use of your preparation time.

Common IELTS Listening Mistakes

Losing Concentration After One Difficult Question

One missed answer can easily lead to another missed answer.

If you do not know an answer, make your best decision and continue listening.

Do not spend too much time thinking about a question that has already passed.

Choosing an Answer Because You Heard the Same Word

Hearing a word from an answer option does not necessarily mean the option is correct.

The speaker may:

  • Correct the information
  • Reject an idea
  • Compare two options
  • Give an alternative
  • Change their mind

Always listen to the meaning of the complete statement.

Ignoring Spelling

In completion questions, spelling matters.

For example, if the correct answer is:

environment

writing:

enviroment

can result in a lost mark.

Not Reading the Questions Before Listening

Use the available time to preview the questions.

Look for:

  • Names
  • Numbers
  • Dates
  • Places
  • Keywords
  • Question types
  • Grammar clues

Trying to Understand Every Word

You do not need to understand every word in the recording.

Focus on the information required to answer the questions.

Strong IELTS Listening performance depends on understanding the relevant information, not translating every sentence into your first language.

How to Improve Your IELTS Listening Mock Test Score

Taking more tests is not automatically the best way to improve.

You need to combine mock tests with targeted practice.

1. Identify Your Weakest Question Types

Keep a record of your errors.

For example:

  • Multiple choice: 6 mistakes
  • Matching: 2 mistakes
  • Form completion: 1 mistake
  • Map labelling: 4 mistakes
  • Sentence completion: 2 mistakes

This immediately tells you where to focus.

2. Practise Prediction

Before listening, predict what type of information might be required.

If the sentence is:

The course starts on ________.

You can predict that the answer is probably a day or date.

If the sentence is:

The total cost is £________.

You know that you should listen for a number.

3. Learn to Recognise Paraphrasing

IELTS Listening does not always repeat the exact language used in the questions.

For example:

Question:
The building is close to the station.

Recording:
The station is only a few minutes’ walk from the building.

The meaning is similar even though the wording is different.

4. Improve Your Spelling

Create a personal list of words you frequently spell incorrectly.

Practise:

  • Names
  • Places
  • Academic vocabulary
  • Numbers
  • Common nouns
  • Frequently tested words

5. Practise Different Accents

IELTS Listening uses a range of English accents, including British, Australian, New Zealand and North American accents.

Do not prepare by listening exclusively to one accent.

6. Take Full Mock Tests Regularly

Full mock tests help you develop concentration and test-day discipline.

However, do not take a new test every day without analysing your mistakes.

A better approach is:

Mock test → Score → Mistake analysis → Targeted practice → Another mock test

How Often Should You Take an IELTS Listening Mock Test?

The ideal frequency depends on your current level and how close you are to your exam.

A practical approach is:

Several Weeks Before the Exam

Take approximately one full Listening mock test each week.

Use the remaining study sessions for targeted skill development.

During Intensive Preparation

You may increase the frequency to two or more full tests per week if you have enough time to analyse the results properly.

In the Final Week

Use realistic full-length practice to check your readiness, but avoid taking so many tests that you become mentally exhausted.

The objective is not to collect as many scores as possible.

The objective is to identify and eliminate recurring weaknesses.

IELTS Listening Mock Test vs IELTS Listening Practice

These two activities are related but serve different purposes.

IELTS Listening Practice IELTS Listening Mock Test
Focuses on individual skills Simulates the complete test
Can target one question type Includes different question types
Can be paused during learning Should follow test conditions
Useful for learning Useful for measuring performance
Mistakes can be corrected immediately Mistakes are analysed afterwards

You should use both.

Practice helps you develop the skill.

Mock tests help you measure how well you can apply that skill under realistic conditions.

How to Use IELTS Listening Mock Test Answers

Do not simply check your answer sheet and move on.

Use the answer key as a diagnostic tool.

For every wrong answer:

Step 1: Find the Relevant Part of the Recording

Identify where the information appeared.

Step 2: Read the Transcript

If a transcript is available, examine the sentence containing the answer.

Step 3: Identify the Problem

Ask yourself whether the problem was:

  • Vocabulary
  • Pronunciation
  • Concentration
  • Prediction
  • Paraphrasing
  • Spelling
  • Grammar
  • Question interpretation

Step 4: Listen Again

Now listen to the same section again.

At this stage, you are no longer testing yourself.

You are learning from the mistake.

Step 5: Record the Lesson

Write down what caused the error.

For example:

“I knew the word but did not recognise it when the speaker pronounced it.”

This is much more useful than simply writing:

“Question 27 wrong.”

A 7-Day IELTS Listening Mock Test Practice Plan

If you are preparing for an IELTS exam and want a structured approach, try this seven-day cycle.

Day 1: Full Mock Test

Complete one 40-question Listening test under realistic conditions.

Record your score.

Day 2: Mistake Analysis

Review every incorrect answer.

Categorise your mistakes.

Day 3: Part 1 and Part 2

Practise everyday conversations and information-based recordings.

Focus on:

  • Names
  • Numbers
  • Dates
  • Places
  • Forms
  • Specific details

Day 4: Part 3

Practise conversations involving academic or educational situations.

Focus on:

  • Speaker changes
  • Opinions
  • Comparisons
  • Corrections
  • Paraphrasing

Day 5: Part 4

Practise academic monologues.

Focus on:

  • Note completion
  • Following a lecture
  • Identifying key ideas
  • Predicting answers

Day 6: Question-Type Practice

Focus on your weakest question types.

For example:

  • Multiple choice
  • Matching
  • Map labelling
  • Sentence completion
  • Summary completion

Day 7: Full Mock Test

Take another complete Listening mock test.

Compare your score and error patterns with Day 1.

If your score has not improved, examine the mistakes rather than simply taking another test.

IELTS Listening Mock Test Checklist

Before starting your next mock test, make sure you can answer “yes” to these questions:

  • I will complete all 40 questions.
  • I will listen to each recording only once.
  • I will not pause the recording.
  • I will not use a transcript during the test.
  • I will follow the word-limit instructions.
  • I will check spelling carefully.
  • I will record my raw score.
  • I will analyse every incorrect answer.
  • I will identify my weakest question types.
  • I will create a plan for targeted practice.

Frequently Asked Questions About IELTS Listening Mock Tests

How many questions are in an IELTS Listening mock test?

A full IELTS Listening mock test should contain 40 questions, reflecting the structure of the real Listening test. The questions are divided across four parts.

Is the IELTS Listening test the same for Academic and General Training?

Yes. The Listening test is the same for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. The Reading and Writing tests are different.

How long is the IELTS Listening test?

The Listening section takes approximately 30 minutes.

How many times can I listen to the recording?

In the IELTS Listening test, each recording is played once only. You should therefore practise without replaying the audio when taking a realistic mock test.

What score is Band 7 in IELTS Listening?

IELTS reports that approximately 30 correct answers out of 40 corresponds to Band 7.0, although the exact conversion can vary slightly between test versions.

Are IELTS Listening mock tests useful?

Yes, when they are used correctly. A mock test can help you become familiar with the format, practise under timed conditions, measure your performance and identify weaknesses. Official IELTS practice resources also recommend using sample tests to become familiar with the test format and review answers.

Should I take a Listening mock test every day?

Not necessarily. Taking a test without analysing your mistakes can limit its value. A better approach is to combine full mock tests with targeted practice based on your errors.

What should I do if my IELTS Listening score is not improving?

Start by analysing your mistakes by question type and test part. Determine whether your main problems involve vocabulary, spelling, paraphrasing, concentration, question interpretation or a particular section of the test.

Then create a targeted practice plan and use another full mock test to measure your progress.

Take Your IELTS Listening Practice Further

A realistic IELTS Listening mock test is more than a collection of questions. It should help you understand how you perform under exam conditions and, more importantly, show you what needs to improve.

The most effective preparation cycle is simple:

Practise → Take a mock test → Check your answers → Analyse your mistakes → Target your weaknesses → Take another mock test.

If you are preparing for IELTS in Qatar and want to measure your readiness more realistically, consider taking a structured IELTS mock test with IFI Qatar. A supervised mock-test experience can help you practise test conditions, identify areas for improvement and approach your actual exam with a clearer understanding of your current performance.

Final Tips for IELTS Listening

Remember these five principles before your next Listening mock test:

  1. Read before you listen. Use the question information to predict what you need to hear.
  2. Listen for meaning, not just words. IELTS frequently uses paraphrasing.
  3. Do not panic after one missed answer. Move on and protect the next question.
  4. Check every mistake. Your errors show you what to practise.
  5. Practise under realistic conditions. A mock test is most useful when it accurately reflects the demands of the real examination.

The goal is not simply to complete more IELTS Listening tests.

The goal is to make every mock test teach you something that improves your next score.
