In the world of IELTS Academic Writing Task 1, the ability to make accurate comparisons and utilize a variety of structures is crucial for achieving a high band score. This article delves into the importance of these elements and provides insights into why they are essential for exam success.

The Significance of Correct Comparisons

One of the primary objectives of IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 is to analyze and describe data presented in the form of graphs, charts, or tables. Making accurate comparisons is fundamental to achieving this goal, as it enables you to showcase your analytical skills and highlight the most significant trends, patterns, or differences within the given data.

Correctly comparing various data points demonstrates a clear understanding of the information presented, which in turn increases your credibility as a writer and earns you valuable marks in the exam. In addition, using appropriate comparative language allows you to describe data more succinctly, ensuring you can cover all essential aspects within the word limit.

Importance of Using a Variety of Structures

Employing a diverse range of structures is another vital aspect of IELTS Academic Writing Task 1. Using various sentence patterns and grammatical structures showcases your language proficiency and ability to express ideas coherently and concisely. It also makes your writing more engaging and readable, as it avoids monotonous repetition and keeps the reader’s interest.

Moreover, demonstrating a range of structures helps you meet the assessment criteria for the Writing section, particularly those related to coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. The IELTS examiners will be looking for a mix of simple, compound, and complex sentences, along with an appropriate use of linking words and transitional phrases.

5 Key Structures for Comparing Data

The following sentence structures are highly recommended for IELTS writing task 1 academic:

  4. Among all . . ., (A) showed . . .
  5. Between (year X) and (year Y), (A) saw . . .

Now, look at these example sentences:

  1. In contrast to urban areas, rural regions experienced a decline in internet connectivity over the past decade.
  2. While smartphone sales increased, the demand for desktop computers decreased significantly between 2010 and 2020.
  3. In comparison to Germany, France witnessed a more gradual growth in energy use during the period.
  4. Among all countries, Japan showed the highest literacy rate, with nearly 100% of its population being literate.
  5. Between 2000 and 2010, Canada saw a steady increase in its GDP, with a notable surge in the final three years.

Practice Activity

Here is an IELTS Academic Task 1 table:

  • You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

This table presents data on the global sales of the top three smartphones over a five-year period (2018-2022).

Global Smartphone Sales (in millions)

Nexun  50 55 60 65

70

Astracom  30 40 50 60 70
Omnia 20 25 30 35 40

  • Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons where appropriate.
  • Write at least 150 words.

Sample Answer:

The provided table shows global smartphone sales for three companies—Nexun, Astracom, and Omnia—over five years from 2018 to 2022.

In contrast to Nexun, which experienced a consistent rise in sales over the years, Omnia displayed a relatively slower growth rate, with its sales numbers gradually increasing from 20 million in 2018 to 40 million in 2022.

While Astracom demonstrated a steady increase in sales, rising from 30 million in 2018 to 70 million in 2022, Omnia’s growth was less pronounced during the same period. In comparison to Astracom’s 40% sales increase between 2018 and 2019, Nexun witnessed a more moderate 10% growth rate.

Among all three companies, Nexun showed the most consistent growth, with an increase of 20 million units sold over the five-year period. Between 2020 and 2022, Astracom saw a significant surge in sales, matching Nexun’s sales numbers by the end of the given period.

Overall, the provided data highlights the dynamic nature of the global smartphone market, with varying degrees of growth and competition between Nexun, Astracom, and Omnia.
