Achieving a high score in the IELTS Writing Task 2 section is a crucial goal for many English language learners seeking to demonstrate their proficiency. One key factor contributing to success in this is exploring a wide range of topics and examining various sample responses. This article will delve into the importance of these strategies and provide insights on how they can enhance test-takers’ performance.

Firstly, familiarizing oneself with a diverse range of topics is essential in preparing for the IELTS Writing Task 2. The essay prompts in this section encompass various subjects, including but not limited to education, technology, environment, health, and social issues. Exposure to a wide array of topics ensures that test-takers are comfortable discussing different subject matters, thus building their adaptability and confidence.

Moreover, exploring various topics aids in developing critical thinking skills and the ability to present well-structured arguments. By engaging with a multitude of subject areas, individuals can fine-tune their analytical abilities and learn to construct persuasive arguments, which are vital for achieving a high score in the Writing Task 2.

In addition to topic variety, studying numerous sample essays is another indispensable tool for IELTS test-takers. Examining model responses provides valuable insights into the structure, coherence, and cohesion required for a high-scoring essay. By analyzing these samples, candidates can learn effective ways to introduce their arguments, support their claims with evidence, and provide logical conclusions.

Furthermore, dissecting sample essays exposes test-takers to a range of vocabulary and grammar structures, which they can integrate into their own writing. Studying examples enables individuals to understand the level of lexical resource and grammatical accuracy expected in a successful IELTS essay, equipping them with the tools necessary for success.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic (September 2025)

Model Answer

Introductory Paragraph

In recent years, the notion of offering free public transportation in major cities has gained traction. While there are valid arguments on both sides, I believe that the advantages of such an initiative would far outweigh the potential drawbacks. This essay will delve into the merits and demerits of free public transportation, ultimately arguing in favor of its implementation.

Body Paragraph 1

On the one hand, those who oppose free public transportation often cite budgetary constraints and potential overcrowding as primary concerns. Indeed, the cost of operating and maintaining a comprehensive public transit system can be substantial, and making it free would undoubtedly strain municipal budgets. Moreover, offering complimentary services could lead to overcrowded vehicles and infrastructure, potentially diminishing the overall quality and efficiency of the system.

Body Paragraph 2

However, these issues can be mitigated through strategic planning and alternative funding sources. Governments could explore innovative financing mechanisms, such as congestion pricing or public-private partnerships, to offset the costs associated with free public transportation. Furthermore, implementing targeted service expansions and improvements can address concerns about overcrowding, ensuring a comfortable and efficient experience for all users.

Body Paragraph 3

On the other hand, the benefits of providing free public transportation are numerous and far-reaching. Perhaps most notably, it would encourage more people to use transit services, reducing reliance on private vehicles and alleviating traffic congestion in urban areas. This, in turn, could lead to lower greenhouse gas emissions and improved air quality, ultimately contributing to a healthier and more sustainable environment.

Body Paragraph 4

Additionally, free public transportation would enhance social equity and mobility, as it enables individuals from all socioeconomic backgrounds to access essential services, education, and employment opportunities. By removing financial barriers, free transit fosters greater inclusivity and ensures that no one is left behind due to an inability to afford transportation costs.

Concluding Paragraph

In conclusion, while there are legitimate concerns surrounding the implementation of free public transportation in big cities, the advantages it offers far outweigh the potential disadvantages. By promoting environmental sustainability, easing traffic congestion, and enhancing social equity, complementary transit services can yield substantial benefits for both individuals and society at large. As such, governments should explore strategies to make public transportation free and accessible for all.
