Reading Time: 12 – 15 Minutes

Academic Task 1 is a part of the IELTS Writing exam that assesses a candidate’s ability to interpret, analyze, and describe visual data clearly and completely. This task requires candidates to write a minimum 150-word report based on a given graph, chart, table, diagram, or map.

In this section, test-takers must demonstrate their ability to compare and summarize key data and information and use a range of appropriate vocabulary and grammatical structures effectively. Ultimately, IELTS Academic Task 1 aims to evaluate a candidate’s capacity to communicate complex information accurately and efficiently, which is a crucial skill in academic contexts.

Below is a model report for Task 1, which is a map and a detailed explanation of the key vocabulary:

Task 1 model answer

The maps showcase the development and transformation of Beechwood Farm, comparing its layout in 1950 to its current state.

Overall, it is evident that the farm has undergone significant development. 1950 onwards, improvements have been made to enhance accessibility and renewable energy facilities, while certain parts remain largely intact.

In 1950, the farm covered a relatively small area, with most of the land allocated to sheep. In contrast, the current map shows this area is now occupied by a cluster of solar panels, two parking areas, and a campsite. The former track, which previously divided the northern and southern sections, has been replaced by a road.

In the southern part of the farm, the orchard, soft fruit, and vegetable plots to the west have remained mostly unchanged, with the only addition being a farm shop situated near the main road heading north. To the east, a new barn has been constructed adjacent to the road on an unused plot of land. Further east, a long farmhouse and a chicken coop remain unaltered, with the only notable addition being a row of holiday cottages. The river surrounding the farm to the south and the road running from west to northeast are also preserved.

Useful vocabulary

Showcase (عرض): to show something

Transformation (تحول): a clear change in form or appearance.

Evident (واضح): very clear

Undergo (يمر بـ): to experience or go through something

Intact (سليم): not changed

Allocate to (يخصص لـ): to distribute for a particular purpose

Occupy (يشغل): to fill or take up a space

Cluster (مجموعه): a group of things

Plot of land (قطعة ارض): an area/piece of land

Heading (متجه الى): to move in a specific direction

Adjacent to (بجانب): close to or near something

Unaltered (دون تغيير): unchanged

Preserve (يحافظ على): to maintain something in its original condition

Why is it an excellent sample?

Now, a writing examiner explains what makes the sample a very good one:

– Mention of both differences and similarities between the maps:

  • . . . In contrast, the current map shows this area is now occupied . . .
  • . . . while certain parts remain largely intact.

– The writer uses a wide range of words [nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.]:

  • Showcase
  • Adjacent
  • Construct
  • Cluster

– Effective use of short and long sentences throughout the report:

  • Overall, it is evident that the farm has undergone significant development.
  • Further east, a long farmhouse and a chicken coop remain unaltered, with the only notable addition being a row of holiday cottages.

– There are no grammatical or spelling mistakes.

– Complete and clear reporting of all the features of the maps:

  • A new barn has been constructed.
  • The only notable addition being a row of holiday cottages.
  • The farm covered a relatively small area.

– The report has an appropriate paragraph structure:

  • There is 1 introduction, 1 overview, and 2 body paragraphs, which are all necessary and enough.

In conclusion

Studying writing Task 1 sample answers is a valuable strategy for enhancing your writing skills. By carefully analyzing various sample responses, individuals can develop a full understanding of the structure, coherence, and language expected in this part of the IELTS exam. Additionally, examining model answers facilitates the identification of effective vocabulary usage and complex grammatical structures necessary for conveying information. By consistently reviewing and learning from these patterns, test-takers can refine their own writing strategies, ultimately increasing their potential for achieving a higher band score in IELTS Academic Task 1 and further enhancing their overall academic and professional success.
