Test Day Essentials: A Step-by-Step Guide

Take a Listen!

Reading Time: 7 Minutes

A successful IELTS test day starts with a thorough understanding of the check-in, security, and test room procedures that precede the written exams. Knowing what to expect and following the established guidelines not only ensures a smooth and efficient experience but also helps alleviate stress, allowing candidates to focus on their performance. By familiarizing themselves with the step-by-step process, test-takers can confidently navigate the pre-test requirements and create a solid foundation for a successful IELTS testing experience.

When a candidate arrives at the IELTS test center on the day of their exam, they can expect the following sequence of events before starting the written tests:

1. Arrival:

Candidates should arrive at the IELTS test center well before the test’s scheduled start time, which is 9:00 AM for IELTS on Paper and varies for IELTS on Computer. Latecomers may not be allowed to take the test, and there is often no refund or rescheduling option for those who miss their scheduled exam.

2. Identification Verification:

Candidates must bring a valid, original, and acceptable identification document, such as a passport or national ID, as specified in their confirmation email. The center staff will verify the candidate’s identity and ensure that it matches the provided information during registration in their completed forms.

3. Photograph and Finger Scan:

All IELTS test centers require candidates to have their photograph taken and provide a digital finger scan, which the centre will conduct. This helps verify the candidate’s identity and prevent fraud. So once again, candidates will have their photograph taken, and their finger scan will be recorded as an additional security measure AT THE IELTS TEST CENTRE.

4. Personal Belongings Storage:

The test centre staff will ask candidates to store personal belongings, such as bags, electronic devices, watches, and electronic wearables such as fitness trackers, in a secure locker or designated area. Please keep in mind that candidates can only take essential items like identification documents and water in a transparent bottle into the test room. All stationery will be provided by the test centre staff.

5. Security Checks:

Before entering the exam room, there is a security check for all candidates, which includes metal detectors. These measures help maintain a secure and fair testing environment for all candidates.

6. Final Preparation:

After the completion of all administrative tasks, the centre staff will guide candidates into the test room. They will have a few minutes to get settled and wait for their question materials before the written tests begin.

7. Instructions and Procedures:

IELTS administrators will provide important instructions and procedures for the test, the length of each part, and the use of question materials. Candidates must follow these guidelines to ensure a fair and smooth testing experience.

Rules in the Test Room

As an IELTS candidate, it’s crucial to follow these important rules while in the test room:

A. Maintain Silence:

Talking or whispering to other candidates during IELTS is strictly prohibited and may be viewed as an attempt to cheat. In case of questions or issues, raise your hand to notify the invigilator instead of speaking out loud with candidates around you.

B. Raise Hand for Assistance:

If you need help or additional materials (like answer sheets), raise your hand, and the invigilator will help. If you raise your voice before an invigilator has approached your seat, you may disturb other candidates.

C. Stay Seated:

Do not leave your seat or get up without coordinating with an invigilator. Candidates may need to use the bathroom, in which case they must have their exit and entry back into the test room recorded by an invigilator.

D. Manage Personal Belongings:

Keep personal belongings in the designated area outside the test room or as instructed by the invigilator. Only approved materials, like identification documents and a water bottle, are allowed on your desk.

E. Switch Off Electronic Devices:

Candidates must switch off all electronic devices and store them away from their persons during the test. Any device that goes off or is found on you may lead to disqualification.

F. Follow Instructions:

Carefully listen to and follow all instructions provided by the invigilator before and during the test. Failing to do so leads to losing valuable time and frustration. The invigilator has to repeat the instructions exclusively for you while other candidates are using their time efficiently.

By understanding these rules, candidates have an easy experience at the IELTS center before starting their written tests.
