IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic requires test-takers to describe and analyze diagrams. This task can be challenging, but with a systematic approach and proper understanding of the required elements, you can excel in this section. Follow this step-by-step guide to describe a diagram effectively:

Step 1: Analyze the Diagram

Begin by carefully examining the diagram and identifying the key features, which are the main stages. Make sure you understand the information presented and determine the main points you need to discuss.

Step 2: Introduction

Write an introductory sentence that provides a brief overview of the diagram’s content and purpose. Include the diagram type (e.g., flow-chart, process, etc.) and any relevant context, such as dates or units of measurement.

Step 3: Overview

Next, write an overview paragraph that highlights the main key features in the diagram. This section should provide a general understanding of the information presented without going into too much detail.

Step 4: Specific Details

In the following paragraphs, discuss specific aspects of the diagram in more detail. Be selective and focus on the most significant parts or stages. Use relevant vocabulary and provide accurate data from the diagram to support your points.

Step 5: Revise and Edit

Review your work for coherence, grammar, and vocabulary. Ensure you have met the minimum word requirement (150 words) and that your description is well-structured and easy to follow. Make revisions as needed.

By following these steps, you’ll be well-prepared to tackle any diagram description task in the IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic module. Remember to practice with various diagram types to gain confidence and improve your skills.

A Process Diagram + Sample Answer

Model Answer:

The process of making a coin begins with the design stage. Artists create sketches and digital models of the coin, planning the imagery and symbols that will represent its value and identity. This design is then refined and transferred into the engraving stage, where the manufacturer carves it onto a steel die using precision tools and modern computer technology. The engraved die serves as the template for all future coins.

Once the dies are complete, a proofing stage is carried out to test the clarity and accuracy of the impressions. At the same time, metal strips are prepared and cut into circular discs called blanks. These blanks undergo cleaning and polishing to ensure they meet exact standards before the striking phase.

The striking stage follows. The coin manufacturer places the dies above and under the blanks and then applies enormous pressure to transfer the design. Each finished coin then goes through quality control inspections. The circulation of approved coins begins, which signals the completion of their transformation from an artist’s concept into official currency.
