Requesting a Re-mark

When test-takers are concerned about their test results, they can ask IELTS to review and re-mark their answers.

A re-mark or Enquiry on Results (EOR) is a service provided by the IELTS organizations that administers the IELTS exam, allowing test-takers to request a re-evaluation of their scores if they believe there may have been an error in the assessment process or if they feel their scores do not accurately reflect their abilities.

When a candidate opts for an EOR, their test is re-marked by a senior examiner who was not involved in the original assessment process. This ensures impartiality and fairness during the re-evaluation.

Test-takers can choose to have one or more of the following modules re-marked:

  1. Listening
  2. Reading
  3. Writing
  4. Speaking

It’s important to note that the Enquiry on Results process may result in a higher or unchanged score, and the outcome is considered final. The re-marking process typically takes up to 21 days, and candidates will be notified of the outcome via email, with a revised Test Report Form (TRF) sent by post if there are changes in the scores. If the scores change after the re-mark, the EOR fee will be refunded to the candidate.

Why do test-takers request a re-mark (EOR)?

Candidates may request a remark, or Enquiry on Results (EOR), for various reasons, including the following:

  1. Unexpected Scores: Candidates who receive scores significantly different from their expectations might consider a re-mark. They may feel that their performance was better than the score received and wish for a second opinion.
  2. Inconsistencies: In some cases, there may be discrepancies between a candidate’s performance in individual sections of the test. For example, a high score in Listening but a significantly lower score in Reading might raise questions about the accuracy of the results.
  3. Examiner Subjectivity: Although IELTS examiners undergo rigorous training, there is still a subjective element in the Speaking and Writing sections. Candidates might believe that a different examiner could assess their skills differently, resulting in a potentially higher score.
  4. Technical Errors: Occasionally, technical issues might lead to errors in scoring. For example, there could be issues with the scanning or uploading of answer sheets. In such instances, candidates might request a remark to ensure their test was graded correctly.
  5. Confidence in Preparation: Candidates who have invested a significant amount of time and effort in test preparation may feel confident in their abilities and expect a higher score. If their results fall short of their expectations, they may opt for a remark.

It’s essential to note that IELTS scoring is generally reliable, and score changes following an EOR are not very common. However, the option for a remark ensures that candidates have the opportunity to verify their scores and provides peace of mind.

The re-mark process

Requesting a re-mark of your IELTS results, also known as an Enquiry on Results (EOR), involves a structured process to ensure fairness and accuracy. Here’s an overview of the process:

  1. Submitting the Request: You can request a re-mark within six weeks of your test date by filling out an application form available on the official IELTS website or at your test center. You’ll need to specify which modules (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) you want to be re-marked. A fee is associated with this service, and you can pay it online or at the test center.
  2. Re-evaluation Process: Once your request is processed, a senior examiner who didn’t initially assess your test will conduct a full re-evaluation of your selected modules. They will be unaware of your original scores to maintain fairness and impartiality.
  3. Results: The re-marking process typically takes up to 21 days. You will receive an email notifying you of your revised results, and the updated Test Report Form (TRF) will follow by post. If your scores change, the re-marking fee will be fully refunded, and a new TRF will be issued.
  4. Outcomes: Your scores can either stay the same or increase after the re-mark. In any case, the re-mark result becomes your official IELTS score. It’s important to be aware that your scores will never be decreased after a re-mark. They either go up or stay what they are.

Keep in mind that requesting a re-mark should be based on a genuine concern about your scores rather than dissatisfaction with your performance or the way you were treated. It’s always recommended to discuss your concerns with your test center before initiating the process.

What to do if your re-mark results are late

If a candidate’s Enquiry on Results (EOR) has not returned after the standard 21-day period, there are a few steps they can take to follow up on the status of their request:

  1. Contact the Test Center: The first step is to contact the test center where the candidate took their IELTS exam. The center’s staff should be able to provide an update on the EOR’s progress or offer guidance on the next steps.
  2. Reach Out to the IELTS Support Team: If the test center is unable to provide a satisfactory answer or if the candidate has difficulties reaching them, they can contact the IELTS support team directly. Candidates can find the contact details for their regional IELTS office on the official IELTS website.
  3. Stay Patient and Persistent: It’s essential to remain patient and persistent when following up on the EOR. Sometimes, unforeseen circumstances can delay the re-marking process, so candidates should continue to communicate with the relevant parties until they receive an update.
  4. Keep Records: Candidates should maintain records of all communication with the test center and the IELTS support team, including emails, phone calls, and any other relevant documentation. This can be helpful in case further action is needed or if there are any disputes regarding the EOR process.

In conclusion

The re-mark or Enquiry on Results (EOR) process provides IELTS test-takers with an opportunity to ensure their scores accurately reflect their English language abilities. Although the process typically takes up to 21 days, candidates should remain patient and persistent in following up with the relevant parties if their EOR results are delayed. At IFI IELTS test center, our dedicated team is always prepared to assist and guide candidates through the EOR process, addressing any questions or concerns they may have.
