What Is IELTS Writing Task 2?

IELTS Writing Task 2 is the second part of the IELTS Writing test.

You are given a topic and asked to write an essay of at least 250 words. You should spend part of your preparation time analysing the question and planning your response before you start writing.

Your essay is assessed according to four criteria:

  1. Task Response
  2. Coherence and Cohesion
  3. Lexical Resource
  4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Each criterion contributes equally to your Writing band score.

This means that using advanced vocabulary alone is not enough. You also need to answer the question fully, organise your ideas effectively, and demonstrate accurate and varied grammar.

The Most Common IELTS Writing Task 2 Topics

IELTS can ask about many different subjects, but several broad themes appear frequently in preparation materials and exam-style questions.

The most important areas to practise include:

  • Automation
  • Work-life balance

  • Cycling
  • Cars
  • Road safety
  • Urban planning
  • Pollution

Example Question

Many cities suffer from serious traffic congestion. What are the causes of this problem, and what measures could be taken to solve it?

A strong answer could explain both the causes and solutions rather than simply listing them.

IELTS questions may address:

  • International trade
  • Global culture
  • Multinational companies
  • International travel
  • Cultural identity
  • Economic opportunities

Example Question

Media and advertising provide many opportunities for discussion and argument.

Potential questions include:

  • Influence of advertising
  • Social media
  • News

As cities continue to grow, urbanisation creates many potential IELTS discussion topics.

Questions may focus on:

  • Housing
  • Traffic
  • Population growth
  • Public spaces
  • Urban planning
  • Rural-to-urban migration

Example Question

Possible topics include:

  • Saving money
  • Consumerism
  • Shopping
  • Wealth
  • Materialism
  • Children’s understanding of money

Example Question

Some people believe that having a high salary is the most important factor when choosing a job. Others disagree. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Common IELTS Writing Task 2 Question Types

Knowing the topic is only half of the preparation. You also need to identify the question type.

There are several common IELTS Writing Task 2 structures.

1. Opinion Essay

You are asked whether you agree or disagree with a statement.

Example:

Some people believe that university education should be free for everyone. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Your position should be clear throughout the essay.

2. Discuss Both Views Essay

You need to discuss two opposing opinions and give your own view.

Example:

Some people think children should begin learning a foreign language at primary school, while others believe they should start at secondary school. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Make sure you give adequate attention to both perspectives.

3. Advantages and Disadvantages Essay

You need to examine the positive and negative aspects of an issue.

Example:

More people are working from home. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this development?

4. Problem and Solution Essay

You need to identify problems and suggest solutions.

Example:

Many cities are experiencing increasing levels of air pollution. What are the causes of this problem, and what solutions can you suggest?

5. Two-Part Question Essay

This type contains two related questions that you must answer.

Example:

Many young people spend a large amount of their free time using smartphones. Why is this the case? Is this a positive or negative development?

Both questions require a clear response.

How to Generate Ideas for IELTS Writing Task 2

One of the biggest challenges students face is not knowing what to write.

You do not need to be an expert on every topic. Instead, use a simple idea-generation process.

Step 1: Identify the Main Topic

Ask:

What is the question really about?

For example:

Should governments spend more money on public transport?

The main topic is not simply “transport”. It is government spending on public transport.

Step 2: Identify the Question Type

Look for phrases such as:

  • To what extent do you agree or disagree?
  • Discuss both views.
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages?
  • What are the causes?
  • What solutions can you suggest?
  • Why is this happening?

This tells you what your essay needs to accomplish.

Step 3: Generate Two or Three Main Ideas

Do not try to find ten ideas.

Two well-developed ideas are usually more useful than many undeveloped points.

For example:

Topic: Online education

Possible ideas:

  1. It provides flexible access to education.
  2. It allows students to learn from institutions outside their local area.
  3. However, students may have less face-to-face interaction.

Step 4: Explain Every Main Idea

A strong paragraph does more than state an idea.

Use:

Main Idea → Explanation → Example → Result

For example:

Online education offers greater flexibility for students. Learners can attend classes from home and often choose when to study, which is particularly useful for people who work or have family responsibilities. For example, a full-time employee can take an online university course without leaving their job.

How Many Words Should You Write in IELTS Writing Task 2?

The minimum requirement is 250 words.

However, simply writing more words does not automatically result in a higher band score.

Your priority should be:

  • Answering the question
  • Developing your ideas
  • Organising your essay clearly
  • Using accurate grammar
  • Using appropriate vocabulary

A focused essay that answers the question well is more valuable than a long essay filled with repetition.

A Simple IELTS Writing Task 2 Structure

A reliable structure can help you organise your ideas.

Introduction

  • Paraphrase the question
  • Give your position or outline your response

Body Paragraph 1

  • Main idea
  • Explanation
  • Example
  • Result or implication

Body Paragraph 2

  • Main idea
  • Explanation
  • Example
  • Result or implication

Conclusion

  • Summarise the main ideas
  • Restate your position if required

You can adapt this structure depending on the question type.

How to Improve Your IELTS Writing Task 2 Score

Practise Before You Memorise

Memorising complete essays is not an effective long-term strategy. Instead, practise responding to different topics and question types.

Build Topic Vocabulary

Create vocabulary groups for:

  • Education
  • Technology
  • Environment
  • Health
  • Work
  • Society
  • Government

Learn words in context rather than memorising isolated lists.

Analyse Model Essays

When studying a good essay, look at:

  • How the introduction is written
  • How ideas are developed
  • How examples are used
  • How paragraphs connect
  • How the conclusion works

Get Your Writing Evaluated

One of the fastest ways to identify weaknesses is to have your writing reviewed against IELTS assessment criteria.

You may know the grammar rules but still make repeated mistakes in your own essays. Feedback can reveal these patterns.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Practice: Start With These Questions

Use the following questions for your next practice sessions:

Education

Some people believe that exams are the best way to assess students’ abilities. Others believe there are better methods. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Technology

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used in education and the workplace. Is this a positive or negative development?

Environment

Individuals can do little to improve the environment; only governments and large companies can make a real difference. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Health

People today are less physically active than in the past. Why is this happening, and what can be done about it?

Work

Some people prefer working for themselves, while others prefer working for an employer. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Transport

Traffic congestion is becoming a serious problem in many cities. What are the causes, and what solutions can you suggest?

Society

In many countries, people are living longer than ever before. What challenges does this create for individuals and society?

IELTS Writing Task 2 Topics: What Should You Study First?

If your preparation time is limited, start with the topics that allow you to develop ideas across many different questions.

A useful priority order is:

Priority Topic Why Practise It?
1 Education Very broad and highly adaptable
2 Technology Many modern social issues connect to it
3 Environment Supports cause, solution and opinion questions
4 Health Easy to connect with government and lifestyle issues
5 Work Useful for opinion and discussion essays
6 Society Broad range of possible arguments
7 Government Useful for policy-related questions
8 Transport Good practice for problem-solution essays
9 Media Useful for social and technology questions
10 Culture Helps with abstract discussion questions

Remember: preparing these topics does not mean predicting the exact IELTS question. The purpose is to become comfortable discussing different ideas in English.

Common IELTS Writing Task 2 Mistakes

Writing Off-Topic Ideas

Always make sure every paragraph directly answers the question.

Giving Examples Without Explaining Them

An example should support your argument, not replace your explanation.

Using Memorised Essays

A memorised essay may not fit the actual question and can make your writing unnatural.

Repeating the Same Vocabulary

Try to develop a flexible vocabulary rather than repeating the same words throughout the essay.

Ignoring Grammar Accuracy

Complex grammar is useful, but accuracy matters. A complicated sentence full of errors can weaken your score.
