Last Tuesday, one of our candidates—a soft-spoken civil engineer with a Band 7 in all skills except Writing—walked into her Speaking class looking utterly frustrated. “I’ve read the model answers. I know the structure,” she said. “But my Task 2 ideas still feel… empty.” And just like that, the topic for our focus this week revealed itself.
We hear this often. It’s not just about grammar or coherence. For many IELTS candidates, the problem in Task 2 is more subtle: a lack of depth in the way they present and support their ideas.
🎯 The Real Problem: Not “Bad English”—but Thin Thinking
Let’s take the prompt: “Some people think job satisfaction is more important than job security. Do you agree or disagree?”
A typical candidate answer might start with:
“I agree because enjoying your job is important.”
And… that’s it. (a) No example. (b) No elaboration. (c) No critical thought.
When our IELTS teachers at IFI dig deeper, we often discover that candidates:
- Rush to write without brainstorming
- Stick to clichés (“nowadays,” “in today’s world”)
- Fear “being wrong,” so they avoid personal examples
- Think the examiner wants perfect ideas—not authentic development
What the examiner actually wants is clear reasoning, backed up with concrete detail. And that’s something we can build—with the right tools.
🧠 What IFI IELTS teachers Do Differently
In our Writing Partner sessions, we use a technique called “thought layering.” Instead of asking, “What’s your opinion?”, we ask:
- Why do you think that?
- Can you give me an example from your country or field?
- What would the opposite view say? How would you respond?
We also encourage candidates to speak their essays aloud before writing. Often, their spoken explanations are clearer than what ends up on the page. We call this “unlocking the voice behind the pen.”
Last week, we had a student rewrite his intro to include a small anecdote about his father’s experience choosing a secure but joyless job. It wasn’t dramatic—but it was real. And the result? A Band 7.5 essay with clarity and logical support.
✅ Three Quick Tips for Stronger Ideas in Writing Task 2
- Ask “Why?” twice – Go beyond your first answer. Dig into the reasoning.
- Use real examples – Even simple, personal stories are better than generic statements.
- Practice explaining out loud – Clarity in speech often leads to clarity in writing.
