IELTS Listening – Practice Test 1

IELTS Listening Part 1 features a conversation between two people set in an everyday social context. The conversation lasts approximately 4-5 minutes and covers a variety of topics related to daily life, such as travel, leisure activities, or personal experiences. Candidates are required to answer 10 questions, which can include multiple-choice, short-answer, or form completion tasks. This section primarily assesses the test taker’s ability to understand and identify key information, opinions, and specific details within a conversational context, while also testing their capacity to follow the flow of a dialogue. This post offers one IELTS listening practice test for part 1 to help you get a better understanding and provide a practice opportunity.

Keep in mind:
  • You will hear each recording only once.
  • Correct spelling is important.
  • Clear handwriting is important.
  • You do not lose marks for wrong answers, so try to answer all questions.

Let’s practice this part by answering some questions:

Interviewer:

We’re delighted to have Elise, a wildlife photographer, join us today to discuss her recent expedition to Antarctica. Elise, could you tell us about your time there?

Elise:

Absolutely! I spent eight weeks aboard a research vessel, traveling along the Antarctic Peninsula to document the region’s unique wildlife. From observing vast penguin colonies and majestic whales to capturing the beauty of the frozen landscape, it was a truly unforgettable experience.

Interviewer:

It sounds breathtaking! Were there any specific moments that stood out to you during your expedition?

Elise:

There were so many incredible moments, but a few that come to mind include witnessing a massive iceberg calving, encountering a curious leopard seal while diving, and capturing a stunning shot of a rare emperor penguin with a chick. The beauty and fragility of the Antarctic ecosystem left a profound impression on me.

Interviewer:

That’s not something you experience every day. Now, what challenges did you face while working in such a remote and harsh environment?

Elise:

The extreme weather was undoubtedly one of the biggest challenges. I had to adapt to working in freezing temperatures, strong winds, and icy conditions. Additionally, protecting my equipment from the elements and ensuring it functioned properly in such cold weather was an ongoing concern. Maintaining patience and perseverance in these conditions was essential for capturing the perfect shot.

Interviewer:

Your dedication to your craft is admirable, Elise! How do you hope your work will impact people’s understanding of the Antarctic ecosystem?

Elise:

My goal is to use my photographs to raise awareness about the importance of preserving this fragile environment and its inhabitants. By showcasing Antarctica’s incredible beauty and diversity, I hope to inspire others to take action to protect this pristine wilderness for future generations to experience and appreciate.

Interviewer:

Thank you for sharing your captivating experiences and your commitment to conservation. Your work serves as a powerful reminder of our responsibility to protect our planet’s most vulnerable ecosystems.
